Basic Sewing Course
Small Group Classes (3 people)
4 Classes Ticket ¥22,000
Each Class is 2 Hours (1 hour 50 minutes for instruction, final 10 minutes for wrap up)
During the first session of the Basic Sewing Course you will completely befriend the sewing machine. You will learn to thread and understand the its various functions and sew simple seams, both straight and curved. If you have sewn before but not for a long time or things did not go so smoothly, it is a refresher and clarifying session so that you can move ahead confidently on your projects.
In the following 3 sessions you will be given the choice of constructing a simple project. You will learn to lay out and cut fabrics correctly, follow a paper sewing pattern, sew the pieces in the correct order and insert a zipper.
Project choices are:
- Bag
- Cushion cover
- Simple trouser or skirt with elastic waistband or zipper*
*We recommend you choose a sewing pattern from the Melanie Uematsu Pattern Library. We have patterns designed for our Basic Course learners that are made to measure your individual size. Details will be explained to you during the first session.
Tools & Materials (applicable for all lessons)
We provide all kinds of sewing tools for your project, such as sewing machine, scissors, bobbins, pins, pin cushion, measuring tape, pattern rulers etc. If you prefer to bring any of your own tools, please feel free to do so.
After you choose your basic project, you are responsible for bringing your choice of fabric, matching thread, buttons, zippers (as necessary) and the print out of your paper sewing pattern. I will provide you with a list of material necessary at the first session of the Basic Course.

Pattern Making Lessons
Intensive One-To-One Classes
1 Ticket = ¥14,000 or 4 Tickets= ¥54,000
Each Class is 2 Hours (1 hour 50 minutes for instruction, final 10 minutes for wrap up)
Once you have mastered various sewing techniques and you tried several patterns from our Pattern Library, you might want to start designing your own garments and patterns. I have developed a special step-by-step guide that helps you learn the systematic of pattern making.
Special Equipment:
- The Basic Sloper Dress and its paper pattern (additional ¥6000) and/or the Basic Trouser Sloper and its paper pattern (additional ¥4000).
- Drafting paper, drafting materials, such as pencils, pens, scissors etc.
The measurements for your Basic Slopers will be taken in advance to the start of your classes.
This makes the Sewing Classes outstanding and special:
I am using the CAD Software Grafis Version 12 for constructing tailoring patterns. I measure about 45-50 measurements on the body of my students and clients and the software will calculate an exact grid around the body. This is then transformed to a tailoring pattern. The pattern shows “your body on paper” like a “second skin”. With this very exact pattern you have the possibility to tailor garments with a perfect fit and will be completely independent to any ready-to-wear patterns on the market! You don’t waist time to adjust and re-model mass production patterns any longer, and you can fully concentrate on the pattern construction of our own ideas!
